7月30日の「国際フレンドシップ・デー」に関連し、さいたま市の姉妹都市であるアメリカ合衆国ピッツバーグ市およびニューヨーク市を訪問した３名の生徒が、始業式に英語で全校生徒へ報告を行いました。

この研修には、さいたま市立高校の有志生徒が参加し、さいたま市の代表として現地を訪問しました。本校から参加した3名の生徒は、現地での学びや交流について、次の3つの視点から報告しました。

① ピッツバーグ市訪問

姉妹都市であるピッツバーグ市を訪問し、市長への表敬訪問を行いました。また、さいたま市の魅力や将来像について紹介するとともに、ピッツバーグ市が取り組むまちづくりや政策についてお話を伺いました。

さらに、現地高校での学校交流やホームステイを通して、多くの市民や高校生と交流を深めました。参加した生徒からは、「現地の高校生の英語のスピードに驚いたが、自分の英語力をさらに伸ばしたいという意欲につながった」との感想が聞かれました。

② ニューヨーク市訪問

ニューヨークでは、国際連合本部、グラウンド・ゼロ、自由の女神などを訪問しました。

世界平和や国際協力について考えを深めるとともに、アメリカの歴史や多様な価値観に触れる貴重な機会となりました。特に国連職員からの説明や国連総会議場の規模や雰囲気は非常に印象的であったとのことです。

また、過去に日本で英語教育に携わった方との交流も実現し、日本とアメリカの文化や教育について意見交換を行いました。その中で、国際的な視点から今後のさいたま市のあり方について考察を深めることができました。

③ 大学訪問

ピッツバーグではピッツバーグ大学とデュケイン大学、ニューヨークではコロンビア大学を訪問しました。

それぞれの大学の広大なキャンパスや特色ある施設、歴史ある建築物に触れ、世界の高等教育の環境について学びました。

交流を通して得た学び

今回の研修では、ピッツバーグ市やニューヨーク市でのさまざまな人々との交流を通して、国際的な視野を広げるとともに、多様な価値観への理解を深めることができました。

参加した生徒たちは、言語や文化の違いを越えて友情を育み、自ら積極的にコミュニケーションを取ることの大切さを実感したようです。報告会では、その経験や学びを全校生徒と共有し、多くの生徒にとって国際交流や異文化理解について考える貴重な機会となりました。

In connection with International Friendship Day on July 30, three students from Omiya Kita High School who participated in the Pittsburgh Cross Bridge Project visited Pittsburgh, a sister city of Saitama City, as well as New York City in the United States. At the opening ceremony of the new semester, they shared their experiences and learning with the entire student body.

This program brought together volunteer students from Saitama Municipal High Schools, who visited the United States as representatives of Saitama City. Three students from Omiya Kita High School participated in the project and reported on their experiences from the following three perspectives.

1. Visit to Pittsburgh

The students visited Pittsburgh, Saitama City’s sister city, where they paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor’s Office. They introduced the attractions and future vision of Saitama City while learning about Pittsburgh’s urban development initiatives and public policies.

In addition, through school visits and homestay experiences, they had the opportunity to interact with local citizens and high school students. One participant commented, “I was surprised by how quickly local students spoke English, but the experience motivated me to further improve my own English skills.”

2. Visit to New York City

In New York City, the students visited the United Nations Headquarters, Ground Zero, and the Statue of Liberty.

These visits provided valuable opportunities to reflect on world peace and international cooperation while gaining a deeper understanding of American history and diverse perspectives. Participants were particularly impressed by the briefing given by UN staff members, as well as the scale and atmosphere of the United Nations General Assembly Hall.

The students also met former English teachers in Japan. Through discussions comparing Japanese and American culture and education, they were able to consider the future of Saitama City from a global perspective.

3. University Visits

The group visited the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, as well as Columbia University in New York City.

By exploring these campuses, students learned about higher education in the United States and were inspired by the universities’ impressive facilities, distinctive learning environments, and historic architecture.

What We Learned Through International Exchange

This study program enabled students to broaden their global perspectives and deepen their understanding of diverse cultures and values through meaningful interactions with people in both Pittsburgh and New York City.

By building friendships across linguistic and cultural boundaries, the participants gained confidence in communicating with others and recognized the importance of taking initiative in intercultural exchanges. Through their presentation, they shared these valuable experiences with the entire school community, providing fellow students with an opportunity to reflect on international exchange, cultural understanding, and global citizenship.
